Stimulant Replacement Therapy

(SRT)

River Stone offers Stimulant Replacement Therapy to treat patients who are addicted to stimulants such as cocaine, amphetamines ("speed"), and crystal methamphetamine. Several medications can help reduce cravings for illicit stimulants.

River Stone's Fredericton location will be a test site for a national research trial for treatment of methamphetamine use disorder beginning in the summer of 2023. It will be the largest such trial to date.

Patients with both opioid and stimulant use disorders can take both OAT and SRT medications.

Problematic stimulant use is not always a sign of a stimulant use disorder that needs to be treated with SRT. People living with opioid use disorder and without housing often turn to stimulants, particularly crystal methamphetamine, to cope with opioid withdrawal and the stresses of living outside. Many of our OAT and iOAT patients who have used crystal meth heavily tell us that being treated for their opioid use disorder eliminates or greatly reduces their use of crystal meth. When they feel more stable and aren't grappling with opioid withdrawal symptoms they have little desire for the drug.
